Synthesis and characterization of a novel functional glycol chitosan thermogel for biomedical applications

Thermogels, thermo-sensitive hydrogels that can demonstrate reversible sol-gel transitions in response to temperature change. Although they have attracted much attention for a wide range of biomedical applications, conventional thermogels have inherently limited physicochemical and functional properties. In this study, we synthesized methacrylated glycol chitosans (MGCs) as a novel functional thermogel platform that can demonstrate not only thermogelling properties but also chemical functionalities. Solutions of MGCs demonstrated thermo-reversible sol-gel transition in a range of 21–54°C, and their gelation temperature be controlled by the polymer concentration and the degree of substitution. The photo-crosslinking could be performed on MGC hydrogels, resulting in chemically crosslinked hydrogels with enhanced mechanical properties. Due to their functional properties, these MGC thermogels could be a promising biomaterial for biomedical applications.
