Blend of Starch and Polybutylene Adipate Terephthalate for Disposable Product

We blended starch and Polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) to make thermoplastic starch (TPS). To make TPS, plasticizer and polymer are commonly added. Plasticizer eluting to the surface is a main problem of TPS. One reason pointed out by various studies about this phenomenon was phase separation between polymer and starch. Starch has a hydrophilic property, whereas most polymers have hydrophobic properties, and the stress between these two sectors make plasticizer become isolated in the system; finally making plasticizer to erupt out of the system. To reduce stress between these two phases, various compatibilizers and additives were added and their physical properties were evaluated.
