Discotic Liquid Crystal for High Thermal Conducting Materials

High thermal conducting property is required to develop enhanced heat dissipating materials that can manage the heat in various industries. This research synthesized two type discotic reactive mesogens containing the triphenylene for high thermal conducting materials. Each monomer has vinyl and thiol functional groups for polymerizing. Based on the combined techniques of scattering, and thermal analyses, it was confirmed that the mixture formed the isotropic structure and liquid crystal structure coexist. The mixture was polymerized by irradiating UV light. The discotic liquid crystal film shows thermal conductivity up to 1.09 W/mK. It is higher than other thermal conducting materials. Due to the ordered lattice structure of the monomer core, the film exhibited excellent heat transfer property. This work was mainly supported by BK21 FOUR program.
