Enhancement of Thermal Conductivity in Liquid Crystal Polymer Networks through Magnetic Alignment of the Molecules

With the integration and miniaturization of electronics, the demand for thermal managing materials that dissipate the heat effectively has continuously required. Thus, in this study, anisotropic polymeric film using the reactive liquid crystal monomer (RLM) was fabricated and investigated. For this purpose, RLM was newly synthesized and its liquid crystal properties were studied using thermal and structural analyses. To fabricate polymeric RLM films, photopolymerization was conducted using the RLM in both liquid crystal and isotropic phases. Due to the mesogenic core of RLM, all films had high thermal conductivity over 1 W/m K. Furthermore, thermal conductivity can be further enhanced in a certain direction by fabricating uniaxially oriented RLM film which was photopolymerized under the magnetic field (B = 2 T). Therefore, oriented RLM film can be applied to advanced thermal managing materials. This work was supported by the Mid-Career Researcher Program (2021R1A2C2009423).
