Polyimide was developed in the 1960s as an aerospace material, expanded its use to semiconductors in the 1990s, and expanded its use to flat panel displays and FPCB in mobile phones in the 2000s. In particular, the use of polyimides continues to increase, including fluorine-based polyimide for cell phone substrates included in Japan's export control items, and electric vehicle wire insulation coatings. Korea is a latecomer following the US and Japan in polyimide research, but it has the world's largest sales in the field of polyimide film, and is conducting research and business activities in various fields such as varnish and molded products. We will discuss the structural design strategy of polyimide for use as a 5G and next-generation material and polyimide prepared by an eco-friendly process. In particular, a polymerization method using water as a solvent instead of an organic solvent, an organic base as a catalyst is introduced and various application examples will be introduced.
