Poly(arylene ether sulfone) (PAES) was grafted with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) to synthesize PAES-g-PEG copolymer. PAES-g-PEG was blended with lithium bis (fluoromethane sulfonyl) salt and 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrollidum bis(fluoromethane sulfonyl) ionic liquid. The synthesized multi-functional polymer electrolyte expressed good mechanical, thermal, electrochemical, and adhesive properties, which well-matched the requirements for solid electrolyte membrane and conductive binder of lithium battery. By utilizing only one polymer material for the whole lithium battery system, the problem of low ion conductivity and high interfacial resistance between the cathode layer and the solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) was resolved. The SPE and binder systems based on this multi-functional PAES-g-PEG were investigated for their physicochemical characteristics and applied for lithium-ion batteries with various types of active materials (LiCoO2 and LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2) and lithium-sulfur battery.
