Tetrathiafulvalene based Shape Memory Thermoactuator with High Thermal Conductivity

Tetrathiafulvalene-based reactive mesogen (TTF-RM) containing four flexible chains and thiol reactive units was synthesized for the reprogrammable thermoactuator. Thanks to the formation of disulfide bond, TTF-RM film was simply fabricated without the addition of catalyst or initiator. The structural rearrangement of TTF-RM can be controlled by the recombination of disulfide bond from external stimulus. Based on the results of thermal, microscopic and the spectroscopic analysis, TTF-RM was confirmed not only high thermal conductivity of 1.12 W/mK but also good shape memory properties (fixing ratio of 99.42% and recovery ratio of 99.98%). The relation between shape memory properties and thermal conductivity was confirmed using infrared camera. Therefore, these properties show the fabricated thermoactuator can be applied to heat sensor or a smart window to automatically block out the external heat.
