Deformable Ionotronics based on Mechanically Robust and Highly Conductive Ionogels via Dynamic Metal-Ligand Bonding-Assisted Gelation Strategy

Overcoming trade-off correlation between mechanical robustness and conductivity of ionic conductors is one of challenges for deformable ionotronics. In this work, we propose a simple but effective gelation strategy to selectively improve the mechanical robustness of ionogels without sacrificing ionic conductivity. For this purpose, we introduce dynamic metal-ligand coordination into ionic liquid-insoluble domains of ionogel, so the mechanical property of physically crosslinked domains is improved with the aid of additional chemical crosslinking. The ionogel films can be obtained by simply casting a solution containing a Ni (II) source, copolymer gelator, and IL. The optimized robust and conductive ionogels are successfully employed as deformable electrodes of alternating-current electroluminescent displays. These results validate that metal-ligand coordination is a simple strategy for improving characteristics of ionogels, which will be promising platforms for deformable ionotronics.
