Cellulose attracts increasing attention owing to sustainable and renewable natural resources. The abundant hydroxyl groups in cellulose tend to form a larger proportion of intermolecular hydrogen bonds with functionalized nanofillers, which is beneficial for obtaining homogeneous nanocomposite materials with good mechanical properties. However, the plenty of hydroxyl groups make it insoluble in water and most organic solvents, which limits the facile preparation of cellulose based nanocomposites and thus its applications. Fortunately, N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) with lithium chloride (LiCl) has been suggested as one of systems used for cellulose solubilization. Its regeneration gives an opportunity to make various cellulosic materials, such as hydrogels, films and fibers, etc. In this sense, this presentation deals with two typical examples of cellulose based nanocomposite films prepared using DMAc/LiCl solvent systems with their structure-property relationships.
