Energy consumption for human thermal comfort is considered unavoidable as heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) accounts for ~20% in energy usage. It is reported that an enormous savings of ~$0.2B/yr is expected by turning the thermostat 1 °C up or down toward the ambient temperature. From the perspective of energy efficiency, localized heating and cooling of individual persons is much more efficient than heating or cooling of the whole space. In this talk, we introduce cooling textiles which can control individual’s thermal transfer via evaporative and radiative cooling for human thermal comfort, which can eventually contribute to HVAC energy savings.
