Catalytic Vinyl-Addition Polymerization of Substituted Norbornenes

Since discovery of catalytic coordination-insertion polymerization of olefins, the progress in metal catalyst system has led to development of cyclic olefin polymers with optical and dielectric applicability. Although the norbornene/ethylene copolymer has become the most commercially available type, polynorbornenes obtained by vinyl-addition polymerization of substituted norbornenes have various merits owing to better tunability of various physical properties by modulating the side-chain structure and composition. In this presentation, we report the vinyl-addition (co)polymerization of substituted norbornenes catalyzed by palladium(II) or nickel(II) complexes. The kinetic study was carried out for better understanding of the polymerization behaviors such as livingness, monomer sequence distribution, and chemoselectivity. The concepts of catalytic, kinetic, and molecular design to manipulate the macromolecular architectures of the vinyl-addition polynorbornenes (molecular weight, composition, functionality, and topology) are discussed.
