Force-sensitive molecular probes called mechanophores contain a weak bond, a strained ring, or an isomerizable bond and selectively undergo scission or changes in conformation when stressed. Some mechanophores exhibit an optical change in reaction to the application of a mechanical stimulus such as changes in color or photoluminescence behavior. When these mechanophores are incorporated in a polymer, visible color changes occur under applied stress or strain. In this talk, I will discuss the activation behaviors of two different color changing mechanophores, spiropyran (SP) and naphthopyran (NP) in terms of kinetics and equilibrium shifts with stress level. Also, I will share some examples of the mechanical activations of spiropyrans in interesting polymeric media: polymer nanocomposites and covalently adaptable networks.
