Lifetime Endeavor on Block Copolymers: Past, Present, and Prospects

Block copolymers (BCPs) show various periodic nanostructures, such as spheres, cylinders, lamellae, and gyroids depending on the volume fraction of the constituent blocks, and have immense applications to next-generation nanolithography, functional membranes, catalysts, optics, and energy storage devices. In this talk, I will discuss the closed-loop phase behaviour showing excellent baroplasticity. Also, I will introduce unconventional microdomains independent of the volume fraction of one block. For instance, the lamellar microdomains, which are expected for symmetric volume fractions, could be obtained for highly asymmetric volume fraction. Also, inverted cylinders where cylindrical volume is as large as 71% could be achieved. Finally, I will present various applications of BCPs to advanced optical and functional membranes.
