Controlling Graphene Defects Using Polyvinylacohol through Hydrogen Bonding

Lately, displays using organic materials such as OLED have been developed due to increase of interest about thinner displays. However, because conjugated organic materials used in displays are easily decomposed by oxygen and water gas, a lot of gas barrier research have been studied to overcome this limitation. Graphene might be one of the best candidates as a gas barrier because an atomically perfect chemical strucutre of graphene does not allow any gases to pass through graphene. However, graphene synthesized through a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method contains many defects of nano- and micro-meter scales in reality. To solve this problem, we applied polyvinylacohol (PVA) which could make hydrogen bonding with functioal groups in graphene defects. AFM study reveals that PVA could selectively fill holes with micrometer size in graphene by using hydrogen bonding between PVA and functional groups such as carboxylic or hydroxide groups existing at graphene defects.
