To cope with the pressing need for high power and energy, required for the promising next-generation applications ranging from portable electronics and transportations, there are the fast advances in the field of microporous carbon materials as high performance electrodes for energy storage. Herein, hierarchy-structured porous carbon with both considerable surface area and high electrical conductivity is prepared by the solution casting of intrinsically microporous precursor (polymer of intrinsic miroporosity, PIM-1), followed by non-solvent induced phase separation process and subsequent carbonization, for use in supercapacitor electrodes. PIM-1 is a polymer with a large fractional free-volume with a high intrinsic surface area. The important attributes of the hierarchy porous structure are its ability to improve overall reaction kinetics by providing efficient ion and electron transport pathways and facilitate electrolyte infiltration into the electrode during charging/discharging.
