Bright, Robust and Color-Pure Heavy Metal-Free Quantum Dots

We provide a design principle for bright, robust and color-pure InP based quantum dots (QDs) and their applications to light-emitting diodes. The principal design approach is the growth of uniform thick inorgnanic shell consisting of ZnSexS1-x inner shell and ZnS outermost shell. Specifically, we propose a InP core/ZnSexS1-x/ZnS heterostructure that consists of environmentally benign elements. We conduct a comprehensive study across synthesis, spectroscopy and simulation and it uncovers the role of the geometry and composition of proposed heterostructures on their optical properties. The highlight of present work is the realization of green and red-emitting QDs exhibiting peak PL emission wavelength at 525 and 620 nm with narrow spectra linewidth (full width at half maximum (FWHM) below 40 nm), PL QY as high as 90 % and prolonged stability against external stresses. We capitalize on InP/ZnSexS1-x/ZnS QDs by exemplifying their use in the primary color light-emitting diodes.
